French President Emmanuel Macron announced a new lockdown in a television address on Wednesday evening. This is to come into force on Friday and is initially scheduled to last until the first of December. However, Macron announced that loosening up in some areas is possible if the infection rate improves significantly within the first two weeks.
The French lockdown – like the partial lockdown announced for Germany – will not affect schools in the country. Bars and restaurants will be closed, among other things, and social interaction is to be reduced to a minimum. In general, people will have to stay at home, except to make necessary purchases or go to the doctor. If at all possible, work should also be done from home.
“The virus is spreading at a speed that not even the most pessimistic forecasts have predicted,” says Macron. France is in the same situation as its neighboring countries.
